Those who have come by too late, we appreciate your interest, and we hope that while you aren't able to join us officially, you'll make your own writing goals and achieve them.

This is the post to make a pledge to write 75K words in 2016. This pledge is reserved for any members dealing with recurrent or chronic conditions (including illnesses that flare and mental illnesses) which impact their writing lives. It operates on the honor system, so you do not need to disclose any information about your situation. If you have any questions about this pledge, you are more than welcome to confidentially talk to a moderator. We want to do what we can to continue to support writers and treat everyone with compassion.

For this pledge, the recommended pacing is:
• 6.25K words per month
• 205 words per day

You will not be able to change your pledge mid-year, so think carefully before pledging!

Signing up confirms that you have read the membership requirements and understand that you will be required to check in monthly with your word count.

Once you have pledged, please request to join the community. We will add everyone starting December 31.

Comments on this post are screened, but once you have been verified, you will be listed on the user info page under your pledge for 2016. If you have any questions, please ask on the Pledges & Requirements post.

This is the post to make a pledge to write 150K words in 2016. You might think of it as three NaNoWriMos, but we’re hoping you’ll think of it as a way to introduce daily writing into your busy schedule. Pledging the lowest word count makes it easier to find time to keep on pace but still provides an excellent writing challenge.

For this pledge, the recommended pacing is:
• 12.5K words per month
• 410 words per day

You will not be able to change your pledge mid-year, so think carefully before pledging!

This is the post to make a pledge to write 200K words in 2016. That’s just NaNoWriMo and a few big bangs, right? Doesn’t sound difficult at all, does it? It may not sound challenging, especially when looking at some of the other pledges, but appearances can be deceiving! Meeting 200K is no cake walk.

For this pledge, the recommended pacing is:
• 16.6K words per month
• 547 words per day

This is the post to make a pledge to write 250K words in 2016. A serious pledge to be sure, but it's a good one for anyone who's completed the smaller pledges a time or two (hint hint!). Meeting this goal requires a steady commitment to writing and a willingness to self-motivate.

For this pledge, the recommended pacing is:
• 20.8K words per month
• 683 words per day

You will not be able to change your pledge mid-year, so think carefully before pledging!

This is the post to make a pledge to write 300K words in 2016. This is probably our most unpredictable pledge level—we've seen amazing years, and we've seen years of struggle. If you’re writing on pace, you’ll be writing a half-NaNo every month! This is a pledge level that will keep you on your toes and offers little room for slacking off.

For this pledge, the recommended pacing is:
• 25.0K words per month
• 820 words per day

You will not be able to change your pledge mid-year, so think carefully before pledging!

This is the post to make a pledge to write 350K words in 2016. This pledge is the second largest of the goals, and as you might guess it takes a huge effort to achieve. You’ll have to write an average of nearly a thousand words a day. Even so, we’ve had many finishers here each year, so we know it’s possible!

For this pledge, the recommended pacing is:
• 29.1K words per month
• 957 words per day

You will not be able to change your pledge mid-year, so think carefully before pledging!

This is the post to make a pledge to write 500K words in 2016. This pledge is the largest of the goals and is meant for any writers who really want to test their stamina. While writing half a million words in a year is no easy task, we’ve had several members not only complete this pledge, but exceed it! Be prepared to devote your life to writing if you select this one!

For this pledge, the recommended pacing is:
• 41.6K words per month
• 1,367 words per day

You will not be able to change your pledge mid-year, so think carefully before pledging!

GYWO is BACK for 2016! We’re starting our eighth year-long writing challenge with seven pledges to help you challenge yourself, achieve your writing goals, and build a writing life. Keep in mind that even our smallest word count goals require a serious commitment throughout the year. Before choosing your pledge, please take note of the few requirements we have of our members, and carefully consider which of the seven pledges you'd like to choose.

Membership Requirements & Information )

Pledging

Members who pledge for 2016 are permitted to use any number of writing projects to add to their word count over the year. Projects may include (among other things) novels, fanfics, poems, songs, and essays. You can find a guideline of what kinds of projects we count at our website.

When choosing your pledge goal, consider your personal writing habits and what you find most motivating. Will hitting your goal early help propel you to keep writing through the remainder of the year? Do you need a major challenge to keep you on pace? Have you surpassed smaller goals in previous years and need more of a challenge? Make sure the pledge you make is one that will motivate you.

To make your pledge, there are two steps to complete: Pledge & Request.

Step 1: Pledge Follow the link for your pledge to the appropriate post and leave a comment using the journal you intend to have join the community.*
*Daily goals adjusted for leap year.

  • 75K words, the Light level, approximately 6.25K words/month, 205 words/day (reserved for members with chronic or recurrent conditions)
  • 150K words, the Modest level, approximately 12.5K words/month, 410 words/day
  • 200K words, the Basic level, approximately 16.6K words/month, 547 words/day
  • 250K words, the Moderate level, approximately 20.8K words/month, 683 words/day
  • 300K words, the Difficult level, approximately 25.0K words/month, 820 words/day
  • 350K words, the Insane level, approximately 29.1K words/month, 957 words/day
  • 500K words, the Ludicrous level, approximately 41.6K words/month, 1,367 words/day

Reminders: Sign up with only ONE account.
You may sign up using Livejournal, Dreamwidth, or OpenID.
You may use a fic/writing journal instead of your personal one.
Include your username on the other platforms requested to have access everywhere.
If you have previously participated under a different username (or on Livejournal, if you are signing up on Dreamwidth), please let us know so we can track our repeat members.
If you pledged in a previous year, and didn't meet your goal, quit, or were removed from the comm for missing check-ins, you are welcome to pledge again!

Step 2: Request Once you have made your pledge, please request to join the community. We’ll approve memberships on December 31st/January 1st (as we still have the 2015 members scrambling to hit their goals!), but we'll hold you in the queue.

If you’re concerned we didn’t receive your pledge: We will be updating the 2016 member list in the profile as new members are verified. Please give us at least twenty-four hours from submitting your pledge before inquiring about your status. (Over the Christmas holiday we will not be vetting pledges, so please check back on Dec 27th.)

IMPORTANT: Anyone requesting to join the community who has not made a pledge will not be added. To ensure you are not left out, make your pledge first, then request to join.

You have until January 20, 2016 to make your pledge.
After that time you will NOT be able to change your pledge
or join the challenge, so think carefully before committing.
